Atelier Barnard

The process

Six steps from first conversation to finished piece.

Commissioning a piece of fine jewellery is one of the rare purchases where the wait is part of the value.

Jewellery bench and hand-setting work at Atelier Barnard.
  1. 01

    First conversation

A short email or call. Tell us what you have in mind, who the piece is for, whether you have stones to use, and any rough sense of budget and timing. We reply within a working day.

  2. 02

    Meeting at the atelier

A meeting in Palma if you are on the island, a video call if not. We talk through references, options, stone choices, and what is actually realistic for the budget and timeline. No design work yet — this is the brief.

  3. 03

    Design and quotation

Sketches and CAD renders sent to you with a full written quotation, broken down so you know exactly what the metal costs, what the stones cost, and what the workmanship costs. Revisions are included.

  4. 04

    Stone sourcing

Once the design is approved, stones are sourced. Diamonds come with GIA, HRD or equivalent certification. Coloured stones come from long-trusted cutters. If you are bringing your own, they are assessed and prepared.

  5. 05

    Making and setting

Metal is cast, the piece is finished by hand, and every stone is set personally by Ian. You receive photographs at key milestones. Most commissions take six to ten weeks at this stage.

  6. 06

    Final fitting and collection

A final fitting at the atelier, or international shipping by insured courier if you are off the island. The piece is delivered with its full paperwork, hallmark, and an insurance valuation.

Ready when you are

The first step is the easiest one.

Most commissions begin with a short email. From there, the atelier carries the structure — you do not have to know exactly what you want before you start. Knowing roughly is enough.
